Musical Pathways Fellowship

What can come of a unique collaboration between classical and ancient music when we return to the place where civilization began?

Musical Pathways Fellowship

Join the Abraham Path Initiative as it sets out to answer the question: what happens when thousands of years of music collide?

Some of the most enduring works in the classical repertoire, by composers such as Dvořák, Stravinsky and Bartók, grew out of their creators' return to their own heritages. But what if we reach back even farther, to the beginning of civilization’s collective heritage, the place where we started together?

This pilot fellowship from the Abraham Path Initiative invites string quartets and composers to travel to Şanlıurfa in southeastern Turkey and work alongside the region's traditional musicians, in search of understanding and inspiration in some of humanity's oldest shared traditions.

Over four days, participants move from collaboration to performance. Workshops and rehearsal sessions bring the classical and traditional musicians together, while cultural experiences ground the work in place: the Şanlıurfa Archaeology and Mosaic Museum, a dinner with traditional music and dance in Kısas, and a guided tour of Göbekli Tepe with walkers traversing the Ibrahim Yolu.

The program concludes with a public concert featuring a string quartet work, repertoire by Sevcan Aran, traditional music by the musicians of Urfa, and the composers' presentation of what they learned and sketched along the way.
