The Medina Region
The Medina Region, largely surrounded by harsh – if stunning – desert, contains a number of surprisingly fertile oases, producing crops that are consumed throughout the country and abroad. Indeed, a significant portion of the region lies along the coast of the Red Sea. This sea-side location contributes to the character of the cities in the region, many of which are known for their laid-back nature and their rich culture of watersports and beach-going. The presence of significant shipping ports in these cities has also added an international, wayfaring flavor to the region seen most prominently in its diverse architecture and vibrant marketplaces.
